Honest to God, I thought that there might come a point that John Sandford would just throw in the towel and let Lucas Davenport start pissing in all of the corners. This entire book was the culmination of his bid to take over the world by being the most violent doucehbag in all the land.

Yet again, some poor woman whose only crime was to have sex with Lucas Davenport was seriously injured/murdered. Honestly, he is an epic bad luck charm. All of his former partners need to be placed in the witness protection program.

But at this point, his lack of control has become too much of a liability for his agency to bear, so they are cutting the cord.

And, maybe, so am I.

I was mildly entertained by book 1. I was less entertained by book 2. This book was simply repulsive. The murderer was such an unbelievable combination of seriously mentally ill, drug addicted, & out of control psychopathic that the idea that he would be able to retain a job was ludicrous (especially a job where no one would notice that he was high the time). Couple that with the graphic descriptions of violence and mutilation and no characters for which to root (since rooting for Davenport is out, and all of the other characters are wafer-fucking-thin), well, color me simultaneously revolted and irritated.

We've talked about reading book 4 just to see if there is a turn-around. Rumor has it that this is the case. But, dammit, I looked at the plot summary and I see that it is yet the same villain, who has escaped from custody and is on a murder spree, and I'm like.

So, yeah. There's that.
